In PARQOR’s Learnings from OTT streaming in 2020, Predictions for 2021 presentation, I devoted minimal attention to discovery+ and none to CuriosityStream.
The rationale was simple: discovery+ had not launched yet, and had not announced any distribution deals. As for CuriosityStream, it had the scale of HBO Max and STARZ at 13MM subscribers, but it had only recently gone public via a SPAC.
2021 has begun with both services in the headlines: discovery+ launched yesterday, and Financial Twitter is now abuzz with bullishness on CuriosityStream as a stock.
Neither are significant events per se; that said, they help to flesh out a prediction I made: there is a compelling unscripted-only streaming business to be built with Discovery’s IP, but not with discovery+ as is.
As a contrast to discovery+, CuriosityStream helps us to better understand what the opportunity for an unscripted streaming service looks like.
